Traditional vinyl, both removable and permanent adhesive vinyl, requires you to stick the sheet down onto a plastic cutting mat before feeding it into your machine. Smart Materials, however, are engineered with a thicker, rigid backing. This allows your Cricut machine to grip and feed the vinyl directly into the rollers without using a mat at all.

The Benefits of Going "Smart" (Matless)

Incredible Length: Because you aren't limited by the length of a 12-inch or 24-inch mat, you can cut continuous designs up to 12 feet long. This is a game-changer for long porch signs or wall decals.

When You Should Still Use a Cutting Mat

• Using up scraps: If you have left-over pieces of vinyl that aren't wide enough to hit the machine's side rollers, you must stick them to a mat to cut them.
• Using standard vinyl: Standard vinyl rolls do not have the rigid backing needed for matless cutting. Loading regular vinyl without a mat will cause it to bunch up and jam your machine.
